Designing Sawyer and bringing her to life was the most surreal and unique process.
Sawyer always felt like this Rubik's cube. Endless possibilities and combinations for situations she'd encounter in the Beaver World. The hard part was knowing what scenario or shot in the story to encapsulate and release first as a toy. I thought we should join Sawyer at the start of her day. When her sun rises.
Her costume to me was a real joy to create. The clothing is an externalized doppelganger of the character. It's an exo skeleton. I think the clothing takes you on this journey, it says a lot about the character, and is almost like an outward skin. It communicates.
So for Sawyer's Fuel Dress, it was a beautiful enigma thinking, 'What can I say that's subconscious and reads between the lines about her character'.
A traditional Milk Maid cut. The blueprints of the pattern have been altered to create a sci-fi edge.
The material is durable and hard wearing, it's a functional work dress. Effectively it's a uniform.
She wears heavy duty boots for multiple terrain, including industrial, mountain and forest territory.
Her boots are for extreme conditions, designed to be fireproof and waterproof.
She wears Sealskin or Merino Wool socks rolled over the top of the boot to avoid snagging and to keep secure.
In extreme conditions Sawyer can unravel the top part of her socks to have emergency use of thread in the wild.
The thread can be woven into rope or combined with natural cordage to aid survival.
Snare wire, fishing line, netting, creating sutures, equipment repair, attaching fletching to arrows, making a bow drill for fire lighting.
These are based on WW1 British Army uniform pouches from various disciplines aggregated together on one utility belt.
The side pouches contain her Milk-Plug-Ins for easy access and draw.
I love the historic vendor trade boxes merchants used to have in the Victorian era. They were so well made. Wooden, with painted commercial logos or painted branding. We see them now at sports events, but they're all plastic and have lost that quintessential craftsmanship.
I wanted to reinvent something for Sawyer, and apply it to a sci-fi universe. Unfortunately....she uses it for all manner of things she bloomin' shouldn't! Such as mud sliding, river rafting and on the rare occasion of snow...sledging down Beaver's epic industrial pipes that freeze over. A bit like.....a waterpark flume!
